Description

IntroductionThe state of Rajasthan is known for its kaleidoscopic and fascinating cultural scenario. The region has long contained within it a variety of populations. This has led to the creation of sub-cultures that have remained intrinsic to the history and ethos of the region. Unfortunately, the historiography of the region has remained overrepresented by Rajput hagiography surrounding royal families, warriors and other elite groups. The communities and social groups that were close to the Rajput royal classes received recognition not only at the societal level but even in historical writings. The tribal groups like Bhils, Girasias, Meenas, nomadic communities like Banjaras, Kalbeliyas, Raikas, Bawaris and folk communities like Bishnois, Jasnathis etc, who have made a significant contribution to the polity, economy and culture of the region, have either remained under-represented or misrepresented in historical writings.
